International Tourism Mart (ITM) Started in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

The second International Tourism Mart (ITM) started in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh on 18 October 2013. It was officially inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh on 19 October 2013. It is the three-day event which will end on 20 October 2013. The International Tourism Mart is organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, in association with the North-Eastern States and West Bengal

Eminent Telugu Writer and Gyanpeeth Awardee, Dr. Ravuri Bharadwaja Passed away

Eminent Telugu writer and Gyanpeeth award recipient, Dr. Ravuri Bharadwaja passed away in Hyderabad on 18 October 2013. He was 86.

Ravuri Bharadwaja won Gyanpeeth award for the year 2012 for his well known Telugu novel, Paakudu Raallu, which reflected real life behind the silver screen of the film industry.

MoEF Approved Kasturirangan Panel Report on Western Ghats

Union Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) on 18 October 2013 approved a proposal for Western Ghats development prepared by K Kasturirangan-led panel.

Kasturirangan Panel has recommended a ban on development activities in 60000 sq km ecologically sensitive area spread over six states of Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Kasturirangan Panel Report

1.The 10-member high-level working group (HLWG), headed by Kasturirangan, was constituted in August 2012 to examine the Western Ghats ecology expert panel report (WGEEP) prepared under the leadership of eminent ecologist Madhav Gadgil.

2.The Kasturirangan panel had submitted its report to the MoEF on 15 April 15 2013 and it was put in public domain and also disseminated to all stakeholders for feedback and comments.

3.Kasturirangan Panel has recommended a ban on development activities in 60000 sq km ecologically sensitive area spread over six states of Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

4.According to the report, roughly 37 percent of the total area defined as the boundary of the Western Ghats is ecologically sensitive.

5.Over this area of some 60000 sq km, spread over the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the working group has recommended a prohibitory regime on those activities with maximum interventionist and destructive impact on the environment.
Western Ghats

The Western Ghats, also known as the Sahyadri Hills, a mountainous ridge running parallel to the west coast of India. The Western Ghats was declared as an ecological hotspot in 1988.

A large number of plants, amphibians, birds, reptiles, mammals are endemic to this region. This area has a number of protected areas including 2 biosphere reserves, 14 national parks and several wild life sanctuaries.

Besides, many regions are declared as reserve forests. In recent times, due to anthropogenic pressures the intactness of the Western Ghats is getting fragmented day-by-day. Most of the ecosystem, which is outside protected area is now in danger. The habitat of plants and animals is also threatened due to large-scale deforestation and destruction of forests.

The Largest Air Traffic Control Tower of India Inaugurated at Mumbai Airport

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai: The largest Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower of India was inaugurated outside the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai on 18 October 2013. The tallest ATC tower stands at the length of 84 metres or around 30 storey building.

The tower was inaugurated by the Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh and Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. Because of its height, the ATC tower will enable all the controllers in having easy and nonstop view of complete operational area. It will also help in optimising the separation of the air traffic, while enhancing the traffic handling capacity at the same time.
The ATC tower is spread over an area of 2800 square metre area and is also equipped with state-of-the-art technology such as electronic flight strips that can reduce the workload of controllers and enhance safety and capacity of the airport.

Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban visited India

Viktor Orban, Prime Minister of Hungary visited India on 16-17 October 2013. During his visit, India and Hungry signed several important agreements to further strengthen cooperation which includes a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the field of traditional Indian medicine systems.
Earlier this year, India’s Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid had visited Hungary where he discussed regional, bilateral and international issues with his Hungarian counterpart Janos Martonyi.
Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is situated in the Carpathian Basin and is bordered by Slovakia to the north, Ukraine and Romania to the east, Serbia and Croatia to the south, Slovenia to the southwest and Austria to the west.

Outdoor Air Pollution a Leading Environmental Cause of Cancer Deaths: IARC

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the specialized cancer agency of the World Health Organization (WHO), data revealed on 17 October 2013 that exposure to outdoor air pollution causes lung cancer and increases the risk for bladder cancer.

The IARC data highlighted that air pollution is already known to increase risks for a wide range of diseases, such as respiratory and heart diseases. It also noted that air pollution exposure levels increased significantly in some parts of the world, particularly in rapidly industrialising countries with large populations.

The data revealed that 223000 deaths from lung cancer in 2010 were caused by air pollution.

According to the data the predominant sources of outdoor air pollution are transportation, stationary power generation, industrial, agricultural emissions and residential heating and cooking. Some air pollutants have natural sources as well.

Noted Malayalam Music Composer K. Raghavan Passed away

oted Malayalam music composer K Raghavan died at Thalassery in Kannur district of Kerala on 19 October 2013. He was 99.
Raghavan infused the folk element into Malayalam film music and his rustic melodies replaced the then prevailing trend of imitations of popular Hindi tunes of the day.

Ding Junhui won Indian Open Snooker Title 2013

Ding Junhui of China won the 2013 Indian Open Snooker title with a 5-0 victory over Aditya Mehta of India in New Delhi on 18 October 2013.

Ding Junhui, world number four, 26, scored two century breaks as he earned the 50000 Pounds first prize.

Aditya Mehta, 72nd in the world, became the first Indian player to make the last four of a major ranking event when he reached the semi-finals on 17 October 2013 and he was also first Indian ever to reach the final of the event.

Sixth India- Brazil Joint Commission Meeting Held

The Sixth India- Brazil Joint Commission Meeting was held in Brasilia on 14 -15 October 2013.The main issues discussed in the meeting were the entire gamut of India-Brazil Strategic Partnership including Political, Economic and Commercial, Agriculture, Science and Technology, Defence, Cultural, Hydrocarbon etc.

The Sixth India- Brazil Joint Commission Meeting was co-chaired byLuiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado, Minister of External Relations of the Federative Republic of Brazil, and Salman Khurshid, External Affairs Minister of Republic of India.

MoEF constituted a committee to Study the impact of Hydel Projects in Uttarakhand

Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) on 15 October 2013 constituted an expert committee to study whether the environmental degradation caused by hydro-electric projects on Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers led to Uttarakhand floods.

The expert committee will be headed by Prof. Ravi Chopra, Director of People’s Science Institute, Dehradun. The committee consists 17 members

Pradeep Sangwan was banned by Anti Doping Tribunal of BCCI

Delhi bowler Pradeep Sangwan was on 19 October 2013 slapped with an 18-month ban from cricket after being found guilty of consuming a banned anabolic steroid by the Anti-Doping Tribunal of Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Sangwan is only the second cricketer in the history of IPL after Pakistani speedster Mohammed Asif to have been found guilty of consuming banned drugs.
The Tribunal has found that the Player has committed an Anti-Doping Violation under Article 2.1 of the Code for the presence of the Prohibited Substance Stanozolol, an Anabolic Steroid
