1. Kathy Cross of New Zealand on 30 January 2014 became the first woman to be appointed in an International Cricket Council (ICC) umpires panel. Cross of 56 years in age was named as an Associate and Affiliate panel of International umpires for 2014 following the annual review and selection process.

2. Government of India and the government of Fiji on 30 January 2014 signed a Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) for avoidance of double taxation and prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.

3. Arun Kumar Gupta took charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) by the Union Government on 28 January 2014. The post was vacant for over a year after the retirement of S Hajara.

4. India overtook Japan to become the third largest crude oil importer in the World. As per the data released by Reuters on 30 January 2014, India imported 3.86 million barrels-per-day of crude oil in the year 2013.

5. India and the Netherlands on 30 January 2014 signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in field of Sports. MoU provides exchange of knowledge and experience in the fields of sports management, competition infrastructure set-up, coaching, training systems and training of referees for various sporting disciplines. It also decides top-sport development through youth academies.

6. Heena Sandhu’s score of 203.8 in 10 m Air Pistol set at the Munich World Cup in November 2013 was recognized as World record on 30 January 2014.


7. Vijay Bahuguna, the Chief Minister of Uttrakhand submitted his resignation to the Governor of the state on 31 January 2014 in Dehradun. The resignation follows a meeting of senior party leaders of the party in Delhi on 29 January 2014 that was headed by Congress President, Sonia Gandhi.

8. The internet user base in India was projected to touch 243 million by June 2014. This was according to the data released by the Internet And Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) on 29 January 2014.

9. The Union Cabinet on 30 January 2014 approved the second phase of Bangalore Metro Rail Project to improve public transport system and provide additional public transport infrastructure in the city. It is named as Namma Metro and will cover a distance of 72 kilometer in the second phase.

10. China on 31 January 2014 marked the arrival of its Year of the Horse, which is celebrated across the world by Chinese people. This is the Chinese Lunar New Year is the only traditional day of holiday for the people of China. The Chinese Lunar New Year is also the largest annual mass migration on the earth as hundreds of millions of people of China head back to their home towns to spend the festival with their families.

11. India launched a Gandhi Portal named Search for Gandhi in London on 31 January 2014. With this India aims to popularize Mahatma Gandhi among children of British Indians settled in UK.

12. Organisers of Oscars withdrew the song Alone Yet Not Alone from the Best Song Nomination category on 30 January 2014.

The rare and historical move came following the composer Bruce Broughton emailing voting members to highlight his candidacy, which is strictly banned for Academy executives.

13. The Union Government decided to amend the rules governing IAS, IPS and Indian Forest Service (IFoS) officers to assure them at least two years in a given posting on 30 January 2014. The rules were amended following the Supreme Courts direction to check the unnecessary political interference.
