17th Jan,2014 Gk Update

1. Taiwanese poet Yushi was awarded the Thiruvalluvar award on 15 January 2014 by the Tamil Nadu government in Chennai. Yushi is the first foreign scholar to receive Thiruvalluvar award.

2. Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) and Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) on 16 January 2014 signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance the collaboration within the framework of UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) in New Delhi.

3.  Abhijeet Gupta won his second Parsvanth International Grandmasters chess tournament on 16 January 2014. Abhijeet Gupta won against Eldar Gasanov of Ukraine. In 2008, he won the Parsvanth International Grandmasters chess tournament for the first time.

4. Leaked draft IPCC UN report on 17 January 2014 warned about rise of the level of greenhouse gases and it calls for greater global efforts to tackle the issue. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report has also mentioned that if the current situation continues that hugely expensive technology will be required.
                                            The report has mentioned that during 2000 to 2010, the CO2 has grown by 2.2 percent per year and this rise is almost twice higher from the growth of the period of 1970 to 2000. It also has asked the global community to cut the emissions without any delay and also suggested to make a shift towards the clean energy.

5. Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) headed by Union Minister of Finance P Chidambram approved on 16 January 2014, the sale of 10 percent government stake in Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India Limited (OIL).

6. Garry Kenneth Toomey, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Jet Airways was resigned on 16 January 2014. Toomey succeeded Nikos Kardassis for a period of three years in June 2013.

7. Jamila Bayaz was appointed as the police chief of District One of Kabul province on 15 January 2014. She is the first woman in Afghanistan to be appointed as police chief of an entire district.

8. Qamar Ahmed, the veteran Pakistani Cricket journalist on 16 January 2014 became the only third man in history to cover 400 test matches. He covered his 400th test match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Sharjah, which was overall the 2115 test match in number.

9. Famous Bengali actress Suchitra Sen died in Kolkota on 17 January 2014. She was 82. She was born as Rama Dasgupta in Pabna district of West Bengal on 16 April 1931.She was famously known as the Greta Garbo of Bengali cinema and had worked in more than 60 films, the most memorable being Aandhi in hindi and Deep Jwele Jai in Bengali. For Aandhi she was nominated for the Filmfare Best Actress Award.

10. Union Ministry of Defence on 16 January 2014 justified its decision to scrap INS Vikrant to High Court of Mumbai. The ministry said that the ship has completed its operational life and the decision of scrapping it in the best interest of the naval services of India to dispose it instead of preserving. INS Vikrant is the first aircraft carrier of India.
