20 Jan 2014 gK Update

1. Netherlands on 19 January 2014 won the Hero Hockey World League Final by defeating New Zealand 7-2 in New Delhi. To help Netherlands to win the inaugural title of the championship, Constantijin Jonker slammed a hat-trick at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

2. Lewis Clarke, 16 years old became the youngest person to trek to the South Pole on 18 January 2014. Clarke spent 48 days at temperature of -40 Celsius and winds of up to 193 km/h.

3. Christopher Chataway a former 5000 meter world record-holder and a politician from Conservative party died on 19 January 2014 at the age of 82 in London. He died after fighting against cancer for two years. He was knitted in 1995 by the Queen Elizabeth II.

4. Ethihad Airways on 19 January 2014 flew a Boeing 777 plane on a 45-minutes demonstration flight that was powered in part by biofuel. The biofuel was developed in collaboration with a French firm Total. With this exercise, UAE has turned among the countries that have produced and flown on their own aviation biofuel. The biofuel driven flights emits about 50 percent less carbon dioxide that the fossil fuel over its lifecycle.

5. Cyrus Mistry won the DSC prize 2014 for South Asian literature for his book Chronicles of a Corpse Bearer on 18 January 2014. Mistry was awarded with a cash price of 50000 dollars at Jaipur International Literature Festival 2014.

6. India on 20 January 2014 test-fired nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Agni-IV missile with a range of 4000 kilometers from Wheeler Island in Dhamra of Odisha Coast. The missile was launched from the launch complex number 4 of Integrated Test Range (ITR) of Wheeler Island.

DRDO conducted the test-firing today at the Integrated Test Range on the Wheeler Island.

About Agni-IV
It is the fourth missile in the series of Agni missiles. It was earlier known as Agni-II prime
• In missile technology, Agni represents a quantum leap of its own type
• With light weight, the missile has two stages of solid propulsion and a payload with re-entry heat shield
• Earlier, the missile has been tested three times
• Agni-IV was developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)
• It is 20 meters in length weighs 17 tonnes and carries a pay load of one tonne
• Yet Agni-IV and Agni-V has not been inducted in Army, whereas other variants of the same, Agni-I, II and III has been inducted in Army. Agni, I, II and III

Apart from this, the DRDO will fire Agni-V with a range distance of 5000 kilometer carrying a nuclear warhead of one tonne from a canister in next two to three months.

6. Global Retail giant Wal-Mart registered a new entity called Wal-Mart India Private Ltd in India on 15 January 2014 to enter the lucrative multi-brand market in India. Wal-Mart India Private Ltd was registered as a new entity with Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

7. India and UAE on 18 January 2014 agreed to promote cooperation in renewable energy, especially in areas of solar energy and wind power. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to this effect in Abu Dhabi by Farooq Abdulla, the Minister of New and Renewable Energy of India and Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the Minister of State of UAE.

National Urban Health Mission was launched by the Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on 20 January 2014 in Bangalore.

• Improve the health care status of the urban population particularly the poor and other disadvantaged sections.
• Strengthen public health care system.
• Involve the community and urban local bodies in healthcare delivery.
• Supplement the National Rural Health Under a unified National Health Mission.
Special Focus on
• Urban Poor Population living in listed and unlisted slums.
• All other vulnerable populations such as homeless, rag-pickers, street children, rickshaw pullers, construction site workers, sex workers and any other temporary migrants.
Highlights
• 30- 100 bedded Urban Community Health Centres for cities above 5 lakh population.
• Urban Primary Health Centres for every 50000 population located within or near slums like settlements.
• Strengthening existing First Referral Units (FRUs), Urban Health Centres & Dispensaries in terms of human resources, equipment, medicines & consumables.
• Special outreach sessions for the most vulnerable sections of the urban population.
• One ANM is for every 10000-12000 population.
• One ASHA is for every 200-500 slums & urban poor households.
• Empowerment of communities through Mahila Arogya Samiti for every 50-100 slums & urban poor households.
Coverage
• State Capital, District Headquarters and all cities, towns with population above 50000.
• Estimated 22.13 crore urban populations, including around 7.75 crore poor and vulnerable population.


9. Abhishikta S Shetty of Karnataka on 19 January 2014 was crowned as the Miss South India 2014 at the Le Meridien in Coimbatore. The first and second dice were also won by Aditi Shetty and Meghana Shetty of Karnataka as runners-up of the 11th Edition of Miss South India Pageant organised by Pegasus.

10. Jain community has been granted the minority status by Union Cabinet on 20 January 2014. This nod has enabled the community to avail the benefits in government schemes and programmes. With this nod of the Union Community, Jain community became the sixth community to attain minority status. Other five communities that has been granted the status of minority are
