1. India’s Political and Foreign Relations with the Gulf Region edited by Prof AK Pasha
Hamid Ansari, the Vice President of India has released a book entitled India’s Political and Foreign Relations with the Gulf Region on 21 January 2014 at New Delhi. The book has been edited by Prof AK Pasha.

2. The new Lokayukta Bill was passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly on 21 January 2014 despite of protest from the opposition. The Bill has replaced the Uttarakhand Lokayukta Act that was passed by the previous BJP government headed by the former Chief Minister BC Khanduri.

Uttarakhand Lokayukta Bill 2014 was passed by the Assembly of the state during the special session amid walkout by opposition BJP legislators that was criticised as weak and full of loopholes. The Bill is in line with the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill that has been passed by the Parliament.

3.Union Government of India extended the implementation of National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013 to the States of Karnataka and Chhattisgarh on 18 January 2014.  With this the implementation of National Food Security Act has taken off now in seven States/ Union Territories. These are Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh. Uttrakhand and Chandigarh are also expected to join NFSA soon.

4. Egypt approved the new Constitution in a referendum held by the Egypt’s electoral commission on 18 January 2014.The proposed new Constitution was drafted by a 50-member committee headed by Amr Moussa in December 2013.

5. Expert Committee to revise and strengthen the monetary policy framework submitted its report to the Governor of RBI on 21 January 2013. The committee was headed by Dr. Urjit R Patel, the Deputy Governor of RBI and was constituted on 12 September 2013 by the Governor Dr. Raghuram G Rajan. It has been done to make it transparent and predictable.

6.  Union Government of India approved to set up Capacity Building scheme and Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Climate Change on 21 January 2014. The Capacity Building Scheme will attempt to build capacity at both centre and state levels to assess impact of climate change and associated risks. The Scheme will be worth 290 crore rupees. Besides, it will undertake and augment various activities in consonance with the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and State Action Plan on Climate change.

7. 60-day state of emergency has been imposed in Bangkok by the Thailand government on 21 January 2014. The emergency has been imposed in the province to suppress the anti-government protest that has blocked the parts of the capital and to take care of the situation and to enforce the law. The emergency decree bans public gatherings, censor the news reports and imposition of curfew for next 60 days. The emergency measure came into effect from 22 January 2014.

8. Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on 20 January 2014 approved the sale of the Government’s residual stakes of the Vedanta group controlled Hindustan Zinc (HZL). The approval has allowed the sale of the stakes worth 16500 crore rupees of HZL. At present, the government holds 29.5 percent stakes of the company. The CCEA was headed by Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India

9. Iran has started halting the Uranium enrichment and has begun down-blending Uranium enriched to higher level. The steps were taken on 20 January 2014 by Iran to limit its nuclear programme as per an interim deal with the world powers. This report was confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that Iran has halted enrichment work of the uranium and paved ways to suspend some sanctions imposed on it by the European Union and the United States.

10.  Legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao died at the age of 91 in Hyderabad on 22 January 2014.He was suffering from cancer for months. Nageswara Rao was the first generation actor who acted 240 movies as hero in Telugu and in Tamil movies as well.  He popularly known as ANR and he acted in movies like Devadasu, Laila Majnu, Anarkali, Premabhishekham, Prem Nagar and Megha Sandhesham etc.

11. Kailash Meghwal was elected unanimously as the Speaker of Rajasthan Assembly on 22 January 2014. His name was proposed by the Chief Minister of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje and the leader of Opposition, Rameshwar Dudi seconded this proposal. Kailash Meghwal was Mines Minister and resigned from that office on 21 January 2013.

12. International monetary Fund (IMF) on 21 January 2014 said that India’s economic growth rate in the current fiscal will be 4.6 percent. In its statement the IMF said the Indian growth has picked up after the favorable monsoon season. The higher export growth along with the strong structural policies had also played an important role in supporting investment in the country.

13. Tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi launched the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) in Melbourne, Australia on 21 January 2014. He also announced the name of the teams during the launch of IPTL.
The host cities or the teams which will participate in the IPTL are Mumbai, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. The sixth host city will be from the Middle East.
