18 Jan Gk Update

1. The 25th Road Safety Week was celebrated in New Delhi from 11 January to 17 January 2014. The theme for Road Safety Week this year was when on the road, always say Pahle Aap.

2. The third Lusofonia Games started in Goa on 18 January 2014. The Games will hold from 18 January to 29 January 2014. It is for the first time the Lusofonia Games are being held in India.
Lusofonia Games are multinational and multi-sport games in the World. These games are organized by ACOLOP (Association of the Portuguese Speaking Olympic Committees).

3. Peshawar in Pakistan had the largest number of polio cases in the world in 2013. This was revealed by World Health Organisation (WHO) in a global analysis for polio cases on 17 January 2014.

4.  The four-member women fencing team from India was barred from competing in the Qatar Fencing World Cup in Doha on 17 January 2014.
The four-member women team included Ketaki Kaushal, Jyotika Dutta, Pratishth Batish and Midhu Meghna Akurathi.                                                                                                
                            The Fencing Association of India (FAI) was ordered to cough up 1000 euros as penalty to enable the Indian fencers to compete in the team event which will get underway from 19 January 2014. The team was not allowed to compete because of the suspension of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

5. The US President Barack Obama ordered curbs on the use of bulk data collected by National Security Agency (NSA) on 17 January 2014. The ban will cover all the data related to the leaders of close friends and allies of the US and the records of American.

6. Ahead of the drawdown of US troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, US President Barack Obama announced to establish an Af-Pak Strategic Partnership Office (APSPO) on 18 January 2014. The objective is to oversee smooth transition and promote normalised diplomatic presence in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

7. Tamil Nadu Governor, Rosaiah inaugurated  15th Express Technology Sabha on 17 January 2014.The annual event is an established platform to share ideas, best practices and innovations on e-governance from senior government IT officials across the India.

8. India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd (IIFCL) on 17 January 2014 signed an agreement with the Export-Import Bank of Korea (K-EXIM) for infrastructure finance. As per the IIFC’s statement the signed MoU covers cooperation in project and investment financing related to infrastructure as well as other finance areas of mutual interest.

9. Sunanda Pushkar, the wife of the Union Minister Sashi Tharoor on 17 January 2014 was found dead in a luxury Leela Palace hotel room in Delhi. Her body was found by Tharoor after his return from the AICC meet.

10. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued new 5 rupees and 10 rupees coins bearing images of Goddess Vaishno Devi on 16 January 2014. The coins were issued to commemorate the silver jubilee of Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.

11. A book entitled Sangharsh ke safar ka nayak Mulayam written by Omveer Tomar was released by the Vice President of India, Hamid Ansari on 17 January 2014 at a function. The book was released to mark the birthday of Mulayam Singh, who is the chief of his party SP. He turns of 75 in age on 22 November 2013.

12. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed the foreign investors to buy the shares of South Indian Bank. The permission has been given as the foreign shareholding in the bank has gone below the prescribed limit that is stipulated under the extant FDI policy.

13. Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin spiritual head of the Dawoodi Bohra community died of cardiac arrest in Mumbai on 17 January 2014. He was 102. He was the 52nd Dai al-Mutlaq or spiritual head of the Dawoodi Bohras community for more than 50 years.

14. Air pollution of Beijing, China has reached to dangerous levels on 16 January 2014 and people of the city have been warned to take precautions. US embassy monitoring post said that the air pollution of the city was 25 times higher than the mark that is considered safe by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Thick smog that has been named as Airpocalypse (impenetrable toxic fog) allowed visibility to people about a few hundred meters only.

15. Hery Rajaonarimampianina, a former Finance Minister of Madagascar on 17 January 2014 was declared as the new President of the nation. His election as the President came as the result of the elections conducted on 20 December 2013 with an aim to restore democracy in the nation. Hery Rajaonarimampianina was officially declared as the president of the country by Francois Rakotozafy, the president of the electoral court. He was successful in garnering 53 percent of votes in the elections

16. The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) signed MoUs with FICCI on 17 January 2014. MoUs were signed to collaborate in the areas of Corporate Social Responsibility Competition Law, Corporate Laws, Corporate Governance, Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development of the industry and the economy.
