1. Stanislas Wawrinka won the Australian Open men’s singles title on 26 January 2014 by defeating Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in Melbourne. This is the maiden Grand Slam crown of eighth seeded, Wawrinka. This is the first victory of Wawrinka over Nadal in 13 career meetings as he had never won a single set against the Spanish, Nadal before the final match on 26 January 2014.

2. Ela Gandhi, the granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi was honoured with Amadelkufa in South Africa on 26 January 2014. She was honoured for her lifetime contribution to the freedom struggle of South Africa. Amdelkufa in Zulu language means Sacrifice.

3. Dhruva-3 was inaugurated by Avinash Chander, DG DRDO and Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister at Advanced Numerical Research and Analysis Group (ANURAG) in Hyderabad on 25 January 2014.

4. The Union Government of India on the eve of the 65th Republic Day function announced the Padma Awards 2014. Pranab Mukherjee, the President of Union of India on 25 January 2013 approved 127 Padma Awards.

Two people were conferred with Padma Vibhusan, twenty four were conferred with Padma Bhushan and 101 people were given Padma Shree. Out of 127 awardees, 27 were women and 10 people belonged to categories like NRIs, PIOs, Foreigners and Posthumous.

5. Karl Slym, the managing director of Tata Motors died on 26 January 2014 after falling from a hotel building in Bangkok. He was in Bangkok to attend a board meeting of the Tata Motors Thailand Limited. Slym, the British-born executive ran all the operations of Tata Motors except of the Jaguar Land Rover in the UK.

6. 59th Idea Filmfare Awards were given away on 24 January 2014. At the 59th Idea Filmfare Awards, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag grabbed seven Black Lady awards.
The award for the Best Actor was given to Farhaan Akhtar  for his performance in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
Deepika Padukone on the other hand was adjudged as the Best Actress for Ramleela.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was awarded with the Best Film award, and its director Omprakash Mehra won the Black Lady for the Best Director.

The lifetime achievement award was given away to Tanuja.

7. Centre for Study of Society and Secularism (CSSS), Mumbai on 25 January 2014 was selected for the National Communal Harmony Awards 2013 in the organisation category. In the individual category award, Mohinder Singh of Delhi and N Radhakrishnan of Kerala were selected.

8. State Bank of India launched its channel on Youtube on 24 January 2014. SBI aim to strengthened its social media presence with this launch.

YouTube is a popular video sharing website. YouTube is a platform that will enable SBI to connect with their customers.

9. MS Dhoni on 25 January 2014 became the first captain to be involved in four tied One Day International matches. Indian cricket team captain achieved this feat in Auckland, while playing third ODI match against New Zealand. The third match of India-New Zealand ODI series that tied by the end is the first tied game between the two countries in ODI.

10. PAN (Permanent Account Number) allotment process will undergo a change from 3 February 2014. The official release mentioned that an applicant of PAN will have to submit self-attested copies of Proof of Identity (POI), Proof of Address (POA) and Date of Birth (DOB) documents. The applicant will also have to produce the original documents for verification at the counter of PAN facilitation centres.

11. The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2014 was released on 25 January 2014. As per the Index, India was ranked 155 out of 178 countries with an index score of 31.23 points in its efforts to address environmental challenges.

12. Ministry of Women and Child Development launched the Multi Sectoral Nutrition Programme (MSNP) and Nutrition Resource Platform (NRP) on 24 January 2014.

13. H C Meena has been appointed as the Secretary Security in the Cabinet Secretariat on 24 January 2014. Meena will hold the post till his superannuation on 30 September 2014.

14. Russia and China will conduct their first ever naval war games in the Mediterranean Sea from 1 February 2014.
The joint naval drill, involves Russia’s heavy nuclear missile cruiser Peter the Great and Chinese frigate Yancheng.

15. Rapper-turned-actress Queen Latifah won the 2014 Matrix Award on 25 January 2014. New York Women in Communications presented the 2014 Matrix Awards to honor seven remarkable women who have changed the world, through their work in the communications industry.

16. Saina Nehwal won the Syed Modi International India Grand Prix title 2014 on 26 January 2014. Sania beat P V Sindhu 21-14, 21-17 in the final held at Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. The win was Sania’s third straight win over sindhu.
Sania’s last title was Denmark Open in 2012 against Juliane Schenk of Germany.
