1. Beijing, the Chinese Capital on 22 January 2014 passed a regulation to curb air pollution featuring emission controls. The comprehension measure to tackle air pollution also carries harsher penalties in the city’s latest effort to battle its notorious smog. At present the Chinese capital city is plagued by its dangerous unclean air. This is the first pollution warning of China in 2014.

2. Arogyaswami Joseph Paulraj, the Indian born Scientist and Professor (Emeritus) at Stanford University on 21 January 2014 was awarded with prestigious 2014 Marconi Society Prize. He was awarded for developing the theory and application of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) antennas. His discovery of use of multiple antennas at both the receiving and transmitting end has helped in revolutionizing the speed of wireless delivery in the world of multimedia services.

3. Tony Fernandes, the chief of the Malaysian carrier AirAsia on 22 January 2014 announced that its India operations will start from April 2014. The decision came during Fernandes Davos visit to attend the World Economic Forums (WEFs) annual meeting.

4.  Chilika lagoon in Odisha was named Destination Flyways by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on 21 January 2014. The lagoon was named so for its sustainable and resilient destination for migratory birds.
Chilika is the only site to be selected from Asia by the UNWTO and was included in a list of eight such sites. The Destination Flyways initiative of UNWTO aims at promotion of sustainable tourism.
5.  Ratings and Research firm CRISIL released its Indian Economic Forecast for 2014-15 on 21 January 2014. The CRISIL projected that Indian economy will grow at 6 percent in 2014-15, which is significantly higher than the 4.8 percent CRISIL has forecast for financial year 2013-14.

6. Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has recognised Sambo, the Russian martial art and has become part of the Asian Games. The decision of recognition to Sambo Union of Asia was taken by the Executive Board of OCA on 17 January 2014 at Manila, Philippines. The board decided to include Sambo in the Asian Games was later ratified by the OCA General Assembly.

7. SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) on 22 January 2014 constituted the Depository System Review Committee (DSRC) to undertake a comprehensive review of the Indian depository system. Based on the recommendations of DSRC, following guidelines are issued to strengthen the Information Technology (IT) governance framework of depositories.

8. Minister of Mines, Dinsha Patel launched the Advanced Light Helicopter named Garuda Vasudha of Geological Survey of India from the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), Bangalore on 23 January 2014. The Garuda Vasudha a Dhruv category built by HAL dedicated to the nation.

9. Abdulla Yameen, the President of Maldives during his visit to Sri Lanka Colombo has been asked by Sri Lanka to allow its fisherman the facility of innocent passage through its territorial waters to the Arabian Sea. A discussion on the matter was done during a bilateral meeting between the delegations in Colombo on 22 January 2014.

This is the first visit of Yameen to Sri Lanka since he assumed the office of the President. He is on a three day official visit to Colombo. Similar such request has been made by Sri Lanka to India following the cross of local fishermen of the country have to cross the international boundary for tuna fishing.

10. Two top American scientific agencies NOAA and NASA in their separate releases have confirmed the trend of global warming is continuing. The releases were made on 22 January 2014.              Annual climate report of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) shows that above-average annual temperature was experienced in most of the planet in 2013. As per the release, 2003 was the fourth warmest year, since record keeping began in 1880. The temperature of 2013 tied with the temperature experienced by the world in 2003.

11. Indian American Professor Rakesh Khurana on 23 January 2014 was appointed as the Dean of Havard College. With this appointment, Khurana has joined the long list of Indian-origin academicians, who has assumed the leadership roles at the renowned global universities. With this appointment will succeed Evelynn Hammonds, the professor of History of Science and of African and African American Studies at Harvard.

12.  Jelly doughnut rock discovered by NASA Mars rover was revealed on 21 January 2014 on the tenth anniversary of the Mars rover’s landing on the planet.
The researchers named the rock as Pinnacle Island, which is high in composition of three elements sulfur, magnesium and manganese. Researchers said the rock is the one of the oddest things on Mars that space experts have ever come across on Mars.

13.  Supreme Court made it mandatory for the investigating agency to seek viscera test in death due to poisoning on 21 January 2014. A bench of Justices Ranjana P Desai and J Chelameswar ruled that in all the cases where poisoning is suspected, immediately after the post-mortem, the viscera should be sent to the forensic science laboratories

14. India and Japan signed the Memorandum for strengthening cooperation in tourism on 22 January 2014. The Memorandum will facilitate travel and tourist visits and strengthen the tourism partnership between the two countries.

15. Cumbria University of UK became the first public university to accept fees in digital currency, Bitcoin. A system for processing the payments is already operational. The payment of fees through Bitcoin will be only applicable to two new courses on the roles of complimentary currencies in economic systems, which will be taught from summer this year at the Institute for Leadership and Sustainability (IFLAS).
